Get Prepped for Packing Lunch

As summer break winds down, it's time to begin thinking about how you can start the school year off right. We all know that bringing healthy foods from home is the best way to guarantee that you have access to a nutritious lunch and snacks that are right for you and your body.

Here are three easy reminders to consider when you pack up that lunchbox, courtesy of our friends at eatright.org:

1) Keep it clean: Wash your hands...and wash those lunch boxes and lunch bags with warm, soapy water after each use. Make sure counters and surfaces are clean to prevent cross-contamination. Pack a hand-sanitizing towelette for a convenient hand-cleaning prior to eating.

2) Keep it cool: If you don't have access to a refrigerator or an insulated lunch bag (with a cold ice pack), keep it to shelf-stable foods such as: trail mix, granola bars, bagels, dried fruit, single-serve applesauce, or whole-grain crackers. Remember that perishable foods should not be left out of refrigeration for longer than two hours. If you try to prepare lunches the night before, make sure perishable food items such as yogurt, meat or cheese are properly stored in the refrigerator overnight.

3) Keep it healthy: Choose whole-grain breads, low-fat or fat-free dairy options, lean meats and proteins. Try to fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables at each meal. And don't forget to wash them before eating!
